  • May is International Mediterranean Diet Month (aka Med Month). This month-long celebration creates awareness of the delicious foods and wide-ranging health benefits associated with the Mediterranean way of eating and living that is traditional in the countries that surround the Mediterranean Sea.
  • The Med Way emphasizes eating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, nuts seed and olive oil while limiting highly processed foods and added sugar. Research surrounding the Mediterranean Diet has revealed a wide range of health benefits associated with the Mediterranean way of eating and living which include decreasing the risk of many chronic diseases including some forms of cancer, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
  • In October and November of 2019, N.C. Cooperative Extension in  Haywood County offered the six class Med Instead of Meds series in collaboration with the Senior Resource Center. Twelve participants learned about the benefits of incorporating the 7 steps to eating the Med Way into their meal planning. The highlight of the class was the hands-on food preparation and tasting segment where participants not only developed new cooking skills but had an opportunity to taste healthy new food options. Participants left the class armed with information and recipes to improve their health!
