Zaira Mendoza,  a typically shy student, recently stepped out of her comfort zone and tried something new, a 4-H Presentation. Zaira is a member of the Arndt Middle School Juntos 4-H Program in Catawba County. As part of the Juntos program, Zaira worked with a partner to determine their career interests and then researched various colleges and universities to help them reach their professional goals. Students worked to develop a presentation that they shared with their parents, peers, and community members. Zaira’s team did such a great job, they were encouraged to participate in the county-level 4-H Presentation competition. While Zaira’s partner decided not to participate, Zaira attended the competition and was given the opportunity to fine-tune her presentation and compete at the district level. On, June 18, Zaira traveled to Moore County to present in the category of Careers and Entrepreneurship and was declared a District 4-H Presentation winner. As a district-level winner, Zaira now has the chance to compete at the state level in mid-July. Donna Mull, Catawba County 4-H Agent, shared that she is “very proud of Zaira, especially her willingness to present independently and roll with technology mishaps. It is admirable that although she was not familiar with 4-H presentation competitions, she stepped out of her comfort zone and worked to improve her initial presentation in order to have a stronger performance at the district competition.”

4-H presentations allow young people to develop public speaking skills by explaining a topic of their choice to an audience. Through these presentations, the youth gain confidence in speaking in front of others, learn research and organizational skills, and practice time and stress management.A teenager gives the camera two thumbs up.
