Looking for a Healthier Way to Eat?

Consider MyPlate!

MyPlate is the current nutrition guide from our most recent science-based information from the USDA for Americans. MyPlate was developed in June 2011, which evolved from earlier USDA models such as MyPyramid and even the 1992 Food Guide Pyramid. MyPlate is based on theDietary Guidelines for Americans 2020-2025, which “encourage healthy eating patterns at each stage of life and recognize that individuals will need to make shifts in their food and beverage choices to achieve a healthy pattern”.

MyPlate Main Concepts

To Build a Healthy Plate:

  • Fill ½ your plate with fruits and vegetables
  • Fill ¼ your plate with grains
  • Fill ¼ your plate with protein
  • Have a serving of dairy on the side

MyPlate encourages you to try to make half of  the grains you eat whole grains. MyPlate also recommends that you eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, grains, protein and dairy foods and stay within your calorie limits. You should also try to limit foods and beverages higher in added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium, and limit alcoholic beverages.

According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025, limits are :

  • Added sugars—Less than 10 percent of calories per day starting at age 2.
  • Saturated fat—Less than 10 percent of calories per day starting at age 2.
  •  Sodium—Less than 2,300 milligrams per day—and even less for children younger than age 14.
  •  Alcoholic beverages—Adults of legal drinking age can choose not to drink, or to drink in moderation by limiting intake to 2 drinks or less in a day for men and 1 drink or less in a day for women, when alcohol is consumed. Drinking less is better for health than drinking more. There are some adults who should not drink alcohol, such as women who are pregnant.

MyPlate resources include an educational website, a personalized eating plan, meal planning tools, a healthy recipe database, and even smartphone apps to keep track of your progress. Explore the resources below to learn more about MyPlate and healthy eating in 2023!
