General Cultural Practices

All melon studies were grown using recommended practices for commercial melon production in North Carolina. All plots in the study used black plastic mulch and were fertigated with drip irrigation. Furthermore, pesticides used on all plots were chemicals labeled for use on that crop 2017 North Carolina Agricultural Chemicals Manual.

Introduction

The amount of specialty melon produced in North Carolina is considered to be minimal in comparison to that of orange flesh melon, which has an estimated 3,000 – 4,000 acres under production in the state. As popularity increases for melons in the fresh market, there is a greater need to conduct cultivar evaluations of emerging cultivars suited for production in the Southeastern United States. In 2017, we evaluated cultivars in each of the following four categories of specialty melon; Galia, Canary, Honeydew and Piel de Sapo, from nine different seed companies. Each of these melon types have distinctive differences with respect to fruit yield, size, maturity/ripening and other quality measures. Galia followed by Canary melons mature earlier in the season than Honeydew and Piel de Sapo melons and exterior fruit appearance also varies greatly among these specialty melon types. Ripening in Galia melon is observed as early immature fruit appear green with a slightly hairy pubescence that covers the outer surface of the fruit skin that gradually disappears as fruit mature and begin to turn a lighter yellow color when fully ripe. Canary melons tend to have a greenish tint on immature fruit and will turn yellow to deep golden yellow (varies among cultivars) when fully ripe. Honeydew melons can have varying exterior appearances with some cultivars having a more traditional cream colored exterior. Meanwhile, fruit of some cultivars of honeydew will have a smooth skin with a greenish tint on white exterior that will ultimately turn a vibrant white when fruit reach maturity and are fully ripe. Piel de Sapo melon, (also referred to as Frogskin or Christmas melon) have a dark green mottled exterior appearance that will give way to some yellow/gold flecking on the fruit skin when ripe. Greater exterior fruit yellowing may begin to come through the green background and this transition can help growers identify fruit maturity and ripeness. This fruit yellowing can extend up the stem to the point where the fruit is attached to the vine. Tan striations/netting can often be observed on fruit as it approaches maturity and these striations are often referred to as “sugar cracks”. Piel de Sapo melons tend to require a longer growing season which can be problematic in the Southeastern U.S., where disease pressure is often greater later in the season and can reduce overall plant/vine health. Reductions in plant foliage can expose fruit to direct sun, thereby resulting in “sun-scalded” fruit. Stored fruit of Piel de Sapo have excellent shelf life and can last deep into the fall or winter months (for this reason, they are often termed “Christmas melons”). Similar to some of the newly released orange flesh melons, breeding efforts to introduce an Ethylene Inhibitor Gene into Galia melon cultivars have been very successful. This trait results in plants that produce melons that have an Extended Shelf Life (ESL) or Long Shelf Life (LSL). The Extended or Long Shelf Life melons, as the name suggests, will hold for a longer period. Flesh firmness and sweetness tend to be higher in the ESL or LSL type melons. Greater flesh firmness allows the fruit to hold up better over time. This trait increases the ship-ability, a term often referred to as giving the fruit ‘better legs’. It can be more difficult to determine readiness on ESL/LSL melons and this has delayed the willingness from growers to move into larger scale production of these type of melons. Judging ripeness can be difficult based on the color changes on the exterior of the fruit, coupled with the fact that many of these new cultivars often need to be cut from the vine because they do not “slip” off the vine with a gentle pull when harvesting. In spite of these weaknesses of accurately determining ripeness in ESL/LSL type melons, North Carolina growers have had some success in producing and marketing these newer melon types. More recently, the release of new orange flesh cultivars with ESL traits have performed well for growers and have received favorable support from consumers. In 2017, several new specialty melon cultigens were evaluated in our field study and across all melon types we had a total of 30 advanced lines or cultivar entries (cultigens) from 9 seed companies. Pixie and Tasty Bites are considered specialty “personal size” or “mini-melons.” Rather than be included in this study they were evaluated in our orange flesh melon cultivar study due to their interior orange flesh characteristics. Materials and Methods

In February and March commercial seed companies were contacted to obtain seed for the specialty melon cultigenevaluation studies. Seed were sown into 72 cell Poly trays to grow transplants (Hummert Int.; Earth City, MO) on13 April 2017. The planting medium used was a Fine Germinating Mix, a commercial soilless mix (SunGro,Agawam, MA). In November 2017, the field study area (0.28 acre) was fumigated with Telone 17 and a cover cropwas established. On 23 March the field study area was plowed using a disc harrow and then cultivated on 27 March.A complete fertilizer (12-6-24 @ 400 lbs/ac) was broadcast applied and black polyethylene plastic mulch (0.70 milthick high density plastic film, 48 inches wide; B.B. Hobbs, Clinton, NC) was laid in the field on 28 March.Herbicide products, Prefar (6 qt/ac), Curbit (4.5 pt/ac) and Honcho Plus (1.5 pt/ac) were applied to row middles forpre-emergent weed control on 21 April. Specialty melon transplants were approximately 3 weeks old when placedin a “hardening” greenhouse for 7 days prior to being established in the field on 2 May. A starter fertilizer wasapplied at transplant (0.5 lb of 20-20-20, water soluble fertilizer/50 gal H2O). Analysis for the Canary and Galiamelon studies was based on 10 plants per plot (100 ft2), whereas, analysis for the Honeydew and Piel de Sapo melonstudies was 8 plants per plot (80 ft2) . In-row spacing between plants was 2 feet and between row spacing was 5feet. Field arrangement for the specialty melon cultigen studies were a Randomized Complete Block Design(RCBD) with four replications. Plots with missing plants were replanted approximately 7 days after transplanting toachieve 100% stand, in most cases. Drip irrigation was utilized (NETAFIM, 12 inch spacing, 0.24 gal/hr;NETAFIM, Tel Aviv, Israel) throughout the growing season. Fertigation, using 7-0-7 liquid fertilizer, was initiated15 days after planting and applied weekly, thereafter. The first application of liquid fertilizer (2.5 gal) was appliedthrough the drip tube on 17 May and the last application (3.5 gal) was applied 9 August. Fertilizer was appliedeither preplant or through fertigation in these studies. Total amount of fertilizer applied through fertigation for theseason was 41 lbs/ac of N and 41 lbs/ac of K2O. The total amount of fertilizer applied for the entire growing seasonwas 89 lbs/ac of N, 24 lbs/ac of P2O5 and 137 lbs/ac of K2O.Insecticides were applied as needed throughout the growing season beginning 31 May and followed by subsequentapplications on 7, 21 and 28 June; 5 and 12 July 2017. The following insecticide products were alternatedthroughout the season to avoid potential resistance development in insect species; FanFare and PermUp. Similarly,the following fungicide products were applied; Bravo, Endosulfan, Pencozeb, Previcure Flex, Quadris, Quintec andRanman; and applied on the following dates; 9, 26 and 31 May; 7, 21 and 28 June; 5, 12 and 25 July 2017.There were a total of 12 harvests for the Galia and Canary type melon cultivars. The first harvest was 10 July 2017and the twelfth harvest was 14 August 2017. Harvests were made twice per week on Monday and Friday with theexception of the first week of harvests which included Wednesday. There were a total of 9 harvests for theHoneydew and Piel De Sapo melon cultivars. The first harvest was 10 July 2017 and the ninth harvest was 4 August2017. A similar harvesting schedule to the Galia and Canary melon was followed for the Honeydew and Piel deSapo specialty melon cultivars. Each fruit was harvested when ripe and weighed. Evaluations of each specialtymelon entry included; yield, fruit size, production earliness, soluble solids (using a digital refractometer), fruit shapeand size, exterior and interior descriptions (rind, length/ width ratio, and flesh color), and interior flesh firmness.Flesh firmness was measured (recorded in pounds) by using a Penetrometer FT 011 with a 5/16” plunger tip, (QASupplies LLC, Norfolk, VA). Melon samples were obtained by cutting the center of the fruit, lengthwise, from thefruit’s stem end to blossom end. Pressure measurements were then taken between the interior fruit cavity and therind (near fruit bottom or ground spot and one from the top of the fruit) on each half of the cut fruit. The reportedmeasures on flesh firmness are an average of two sample areas from within each fruit, and from five fruit per plotleading to 10 total fruit areas measured per plot. Most of the quality measurements were taken when the melonsbecame ripe between the second and sixth harvests for a given cultigen.The field and growing conditions throughout the harvest period were normal for these studies. There was average toabove average rainfall throughout the month of June and July, as well as, optimal ambient temperatures that allowedfor good plant growth and fruit set within all the cultigen plots.

Results

Galia melon

Entries that yielded the highest (> 200 cwt/acre) among early harvests (1-3) were Jucar, SFR 3203, Tenorio andUSAMR 14346 (Table 1). The highest yielding entries based on fruit numbers (> 4,000 fruit number/acre) for earlyharvests (1-3) were SFR 3203, Tenorio, USAMR 14346 and USAMR 14350 (Table 2). The 2.2 to 4.4 lbs. sizecategory had the highest percentage (61%) of fruit weight produced from entries among early harvest (1-3) (Table33). This size category also produced the highest percentage (64%) of fruit number among early harvests (1-3)(Table 4). The highest yielding entries based on cumulative fruit weight (> 225 cwt/acre) in the mid to late seasonharvests (4-12) were Courier, Jucar, SFR 3203, USAMR 14346 and USAMR 14350 (Table 5). The entries thatyielded the highest (> 6,000 fruit number) in the mid to late-season harvests (4-12) were SFR 3203, Tenorio,USAMR 14346 and USAMR 14350 (Table 6). Most fruit produced from these entries were between 2.2 to 4.4 lbs.Jucar produced slightly larger fruit with 77% weighing greater than 4.5 lbs. Orange flesh melon fruit in the < 3.0 lb.category would ordinarily be culled; however, as specialty melons the smaller sized melons reflect typical size ofthis kind of specialty melon. The highest yielding entries across all harvests, in terms of tonnage (> 425 cwt) wereJucar, SFR 3203, Tenorio, USAMR 14346 and USAMR 14350 (Table 8). Average fruit weight ranged from 2.9 to5.1 lbs. (Table 8). The melon entries that produced the greatest yields (> 12,000 fruit number) across all harvestswere SFR 3203, Tenorio, USAMR 14346 and USAMR 14350 (Table 9). Interior fruit quality metrics such assoluble solids (Brix), length/diameter ratio and flesh firmness were evaluated for all entries (Table 10).

Canary melon

Entries that yielded highest (> 130 cwt/acre) in the early harvests (1-3) were Fonzy, Gladial, Hi-Brix, Natal andTweety (Table 11). The highest yielding entries (> 3,000 fruit number) for early harvests (1-3) were Fonzy, Gladial,Hi-Brix, Natal and Tweety (Table 12). The majority (87%) of early harvested fruit weighed between 3.1 to 7.0 lbs.,across all entries (Table 13) and similarly, on average, this size category yielded the greatest percentage (89%) fruitnumber for early harvests (Table 14). Average fruit weight for mid-season harvests (4-8) was 4.8 lbs. across allentries (Table 15). The highest yielding entries in the mid to late season harvests (4-8) for cumulative fruit weight(> 160 cwt/acre) were Camino Europa, Camposol, Halo and USAMR 14818 (Table 15). The entries that yielded themost fruit (> 2,500 fruit number/acre) in the mid-season harvests (4-8) were Camino Europa, Camposol, Halo andHi-Brix (Table 16). The highest percentage (76%) size category for fruit weight was between 3.1 and 7.0 lbs. formid-season harvests (Table 17) and similarly, the highest percentage (74%) of fruit numbers for mid-season harvestswere also in the 3.1 to 7.0 lbs. size category (Table 18). Entries that yielded the highest (> 100 cwt/acre) in lateseason harvests (9-12) were Fonzy, Gladial, Hi-Brix, Natal RZ and Tweety (Table 19). Entries that yielded the mostfruit (> 2,800 fruit number/acre) in late season harvests (9-12) were Camino Europa, Fonzy, Gladial, Hi-Brix, NatalRZ and Tweety (Table 20). The 3.1 to 7.0 lbs. category contained the highest percentage (78%) of fruit weight forthe late season harvests (Table 21). The 3.1 to 7.0 lbs. size category also produced the highest percentage (68%) offruit numbers for the late season harvests (Table 22). Entries that yielded the highest marketable wt. (> 350cwt/acre) across all harvests (1-12) were Camposol, Fonzy, Gladial, Halo and Tweety (Table 23). Entries thatyielded the most fruit (> 8,000 fruit number/acre) across all harvests (1-12) were Camino Europa, Camposol, Fonzy,Halo, Hi-Brix, Natal RZ and Tweety (Table 24). The 3.0 to 7.1 lbs. category contained the highest percentage(80%) of fruit weight across all harvests (Table 25). Likewise, this weight category also contained the highestpercentage (76%) of fruit numbers across all harvests (Table 26). The highest percentage of yields based on fruitweight (36%) was obtained from the mid-season harvests (Table 27), whereas, the highest percentage of yieldsbased on fruit number (36%) was obtained from the late harvests (Table 28). Interior fruit quality metrics such assoluble solids (Brix), length/diameter ratio and flesh firmness were evaluated for all entries (Table 29)

Honeydew melon

Entries that yielded the highest (> 265 cwt/acre) in the early harvests (1-3) were 966HD, Dewlightful, USAMR14816, USAMR 16151 and USAMR 16153 (Table 30). The highest yielding entries (> 5,500 fruit number/acre) forearly harvests (1-3) were 966HD, Dewlightful, USAMR 14816, USAMR 16151 and USAMR 16153 (Table 31).The majority of early harvested fruit (58%) weighed between 2.6 to 4.5 lbs. across all entries (Table 32) andsimilarly, on average, this size class yielded the greatest percentage fruit number (60%) for early harvests (Table33). Entries with the highest yields (> 70 cwt/acre) in the mid-season harvests (4-6) were 966HD, Tikal andUSAMR 14816 (Table 34). Entries that yielded the highest number of fruit (> 1,000 fruit number/acre) in the midseasonharvests (4-6) were 966HD, Dewlightful, Tikal, USAMR 14816 and USAMR 16151 (Table 35). In the midseasonharvests (4-6) across all entries, the majority of fruit (57%) weighed between 2.6 to 4.5 lbs. (Table 36).Similarly, the greatest percentage yield based on fruit number (56%) was in the 2.6 to 4.5 lbs. size category (Table37). The entries with the greatest yields (> 60 cwt/acre) in the late season harvests (7-9) were 966HD, Earli-Dew,SFR3079, SFR3083 and USAMR 16153 (Table 38). The entries that yielded the highest number of fruit (> 1,300fruit number/acre) in the late season harvests (7-9) were Dewlightful, Earli-Dew, SFR3079, SFR3083 and USAMR16153 (Table 39). The greatest percentage of yield (51%) based on fruit weight was from the 2.6 to 4.5 lbs. for thelate season harvests (Table 40) and similarly, the highest percentage of fruit number (49%) across all entries wasyielded from the 2.6 to 4.5 lbs. size category for the late season harvests (Table 41). Entries with the highest marketable yield totals for cumulative fruit weight (> 350 cwt/acre) across all harvests (1-9) were 966HD,Dewlightful, USAMR 14816, USAMR 16151 and USAMR 16153 (Table 42). Entries that yielded the highestnumber (> 7,500 fruit number/acre) of marketable fruit per acre were 966HD, Dewlightful, USAMR 14816,USAMR 16151 and USAMR 16153 (Table 43). The greatest percentage of fruit weight (52%) was obtained fromthe 2.6 to 4.5 lbs. size category across all harvests (1-9) (Table 44). The 2.6 to 4.5 lbs. fruit size category had thehighest percentage (53%) of fruit number across all harvests (1-9) (Table 45). The highest percentage (62%) ofyield based on fruit weight was obtained in the early harvests (Table 46) and similarly, the highest percentage ofyield based on fruit number (58%) was also obtained in the early harvests (Table 47). Descriptive qualitycharacteristics such as soluble solids, fruit length/diameter ratios, flesh firmness and foliage cover are also reported(Table 48). It should be noted that relative size of the fruits obtained across all honeydew entries was small.Honeydew fruits typically are greater than 5 lbs. per fruit.

Piel de Sapo

Entries in the early season harvests (1-3) with the highest yields based on cumulative fruit weight (> 225 ctw/acre)were Fortune, Ricura and Ruidera (Table 49). Average fruit size across all entries was 4.9 lbs. for early seasonharvests (1-3). The highest yielding entries based on cumulative fruit totals (> 4,000 fruit number) for early seasonharvests (1-3) were Fortune, Mabel RZ, Ricura and Ruidera (Table 50). The 4.6 to 6.5 lbs. fruit size categoryyielded the highest percentage (49%) of fruit weight for the early season harvests (1-3) (Table 51). The 2.6 to 4.5lbs. and 4.6 to 6.5 lbs. fruit size categories each yielded 44% of the fruit numbers for early season harvests (Table52). Entries that yielded the highest fruit weight (> 30 ctw/acre) in the mid-season harvests (4-6) were Mabel, PX03703001 and Sancho (Table 53). Entries that yielded the most fruit (> 650 fruit number) in the mid-seasonharvests (4-6) were Mabel, PX 03703001, Ricura and Sancho (Table 54). The fruit size category with the highestpercentage (50%) of yield based on fruit weight across all entries in the mid-season harvests (4-6) was the 4.6 to 6.5lbs. category (Table 55) and the fruit size category with the highest percentage (54%) of yield based on fruit numberin the mid-season harvests (4-6) was the 2.6 to 4.5 lbs. category across all entries (Table 56). Marketable yields inthe late season harvests (7-9) were highest (> 30 ctw/acre) in Fortune, Mabel RZ and PX 03703001 (Table 57).Marketable fruit in the late season harvests (7-9) were highest (> 950 fruit number) in Fortune, Mabel RZ and PX03703001 (Table 58). The fruit size category with the highest percentage (63%) of yield was 2.6 to 4.5 lbs. (Table59). The fruit size category with the highest percentage (68%) of fruit number in the late season harvests (7-9) wasalso 2.6 to 4.5 lbs. (Table 60). Across all harvests (1-9) the entries with the highest marketable yields (> 280ctw/acre) were Fortune, PX03703001 and Ruidera (Table 61). The entries with the highest yields (> 5,900 fruitnumber) across all harvests (1-9) were Fortune, Mabel RZ, PX 03703001 and Ricura (Table 62). The fruit sizecategory with the highest percentage (47 %) yields across all entries for all harvests (1-9) was 4.6 to 6.5 lbs. (Table63). The fruit size category with the highest percentage (47%) of fruit number across all harvests (1-9) was 2.6 to 4.5lbs. (Table 64). Early harvests had the highest percentage (73%) of yields based on fruit weight among all harvestintervals (Table 65). Likewise, with regards to fruit number, the early harvests also had the highest percentage(71%) of fruit number among all harvests intervals (Table 66). Descriptive quality characteristics such as solublesolids, fruit length/diameter ratios, flesh firmness and foliage cover are also reported (Table 67).

Cultivar

Description

Courier Ripens to golden yellow with ample netting and slips when ripe. It ripens from dark green with netting forming, and turns breaker yellow to golden yellow with a moderate size stem scar. Oval in shape with interior flesh mostly pastel green except right next to rind. Sweet, soft flesh that melts in mouth with traditional melon flavor.
Jucar Ripens to golden yellow with hint of burnt orange with ample netting and stem slips when ripe. The stem scar can show radial splitting, especially if harvested a little late. Initally, fruit are darker green to dark green with netting forming, followed by fruit turning light yellow and then to golden yellow. Smaller fruit are shorter in shape while larger fruit tends to be more round or oblong. Interior flesh color is faint light green near rind, with mainly white flesh to cavity.
SFR3203 Ripens to golden yellow with orange hue when ripe. Need to be cut, not harvested at slip; otherwise overripe. Exterior begins as pastel/light green and transitions to bright yellow, finishing ripening at golden yellow. Netting develops on immature fruit and finishes with ample netting at ripeness. Fruit is short oblong to round in shape. Interior flesh is faint light green near rind and has a mainly white cavity. Sweet, firm flesh, mild flavor.
Tenorio Ripen when rind is warm golden yellow with ample netting. Need to cut stem and not harvest at slip stage, otherwise overripe. Rind goes from light yellow to golden yellow color when ripe. Fruit shape includes some round fruit and some short oblong fruit. Interior flesh is light green towards rind and white towards cavity. Firm flesh.
USAMR 14346 Ripens to golden yellow with ample netting. Long shelf life (LSL) type, need to cut the stem when ripe, otherwise overripe. Ripens from pastel/light green to yellow, turning to golden yellow as netting developes and finishing with ample netting. Most fruit is round. Interior flesh is faint light green near the rind with a mostly white flesh to the cavity. High sugars; moderatly firm; pleasant, mild melon flavor.
USAMR  14350 Ripens to warm golden yellow on rind with ample netting when ripe. Long shelp life (LSL) type so one needs to cut stem and not wait for slip stage, otherwise overripe. Fruit ripens from lime green to light yellow, finishing at golden yellow when ripe. Fruit shape is mainly round to short round. Interior flesh is light green towards rind and white towards cavity. High sugars, firm flesh, pleasing mild flavor.

Fruit size category

Exterior Rind Rating¹

Camino Europa Ripe as they turn golden yellow. Round shape with pointed blossom end. Flesh color pearl white with hints of light green throughout flesh. 2.5 – obvious wrinkling
Camposol Ripe as they turn golden yellow. Oval fruit with pointed blossom end. Color changes from light green to light yellow to golden yellow when ripe. Peal white with hint of green flesh. Flesh is moderately firm with a sweet, fruity melon flavor. 1.5 – some wrinkling or slight suturing
Fonzy Ripe when bright gold yellow with no fissures. Color changes from light green to light yellow to golden yellow when ripe. Round shape. Pearl white with hints of green in flesh. Firm flesh, with a somewhat granular/coarseness in flesh feel. Mild flavor. 2.5 – obvious wrinkling
Gladial Ripe as they turn a moderatley golden yellow with some fissures (sugar cracks) at stem end. Ripen from a light green to light yellow to moderarate golden yellow. Mainly round with a slight point at blossom end; some fruit are a bit longer than round. Flesh color is pearl white with hints of light green throughout flesh.
