Earth day is a great reminder of how we can help take care of our planet! The better we take care of our air, water, soil and other natural resources, the better we make our planet for ourselves and future generations!
Did you know that the first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970? 20 million people nationwide went to inaugural Earth Day events all over the United States at schools, universities and community sites to bring awareness about environmental issues and the importance of taking care of our planet. Senator Gaylord Nelson was a major champion of Earth Day and called upon people to speak out about environmental issues they were seeing. These efforts were part of what would help the United States Congress give the green light to create a new federal agency known as the United States Environmental Protection Agency (the E.P.A.) in 1970, to handle environmental problems and try help create a cleaner planet!
