On Surviving Fat Burger Month and Supporting Local Restaurants
If you didn't see it, Visit Haywood sponsored an event over the last few weeks called 'Fat Burger Month.' This was a great initiative to drive traffic to several of our local restaurants at a slower time of the year. I love cheeseburgers, they are probably my favorite food... so I participated wholeheartedly, and I have pictures and reviews of the six burgers I ate for my free 'Fat Burger Month' t-shirt!
For context, 14 restaurants around Haywood County did a custom burger for 'Fat Burger Month' and you needed to eat 6 of the burgers and get a sticker for your card. You turn the card in at the end of the challenge to get the prize!
Burger #1 - The 37 Fat Burger at the Scotsman
Great vibes when I went to the Scotsman on a Saturday evening --- the Smashing Mouths were there playing the songs of my high school days, and this burger was a solid addition to my palate. Overall, the Scotsman has a great vibe and I only ate half of this massive burger.
Burger #2 - The Wild Thing Burger at Bearwaters Creekside
I drove to Maggie Valley and was not disappointed by this burger. The Wild Thing Burger included a half elk, half bison patty; which was phenomenal. I had an elk burger once when I was out in Utah and this was a solid treat. My favorite burger out of the bunch to be honest.
Burger #3 - The Cow, The Pig, The Goat, and The Fig at Grebelknud Meat Company
I really like tangy tastes and also really like local meat, so Grebelknud Meat Company really came through with this burger on both fronts. The burger was great and the dipping sauce for the fries was top notch!
Burger #4 - The Nacho Burger at the Red Fox
The perfect 'Taco Tuesday' meal was this Nacho Burger at the Red Fox in Waynesville. Even the beef patty was seasoned to taste just like a taco. It was a very unique experience!
Burger #5 - The Morning Monster at Main Street Diner
For more unique experiences with food, I had this breakfast burger at the Main Street Diner. Their sister restaurant, the Haywood 209 Cafe, makes the best cheeseburgers so I had high hopes that were not let down here. It had all the breakfast favorites including bacon, hashbrowns, ham, and an egg.
Burger #6 - The Mack Daddy Dog at 828 Market
This is obviously not a cheeseburger, but they let the 828 Market participate with this incredible hot dog. It was definitely in the top three out of the six 'burgers' that I ate during 'Fat Burger Month.' I am a huge fan of the Mack Daddy Dog and hope it stays on the menu forever.
Bonus Meal - Dinner (with no burger) from Cataloochee Ranch
I got my wires crossed because Cataloochee Ranch had a burger in 'Fat Burger Month' offered during brunch only, and I showed up for dinner with a friend. Listen... no regrets because the steak I ate, and the entire meal, was the greatest meal I have ever eaten. We had the bread, the steak, the pork chop, the potatoes, the mac & cheese, and the house-made ice cream for dessert. BEST. MEAL. EVER. If you are looking for amazing views and amazing food... you have to try the Cataloochee Ranch. They raise their own cattle for use in their restaurant, so it's local food at it's finest!
We are now moving into ramp season, which is good for me because ramps and eggs are on my dinner menu for the month of April. Because they are delicious, local, and a great way to recover from an excellent 'Fat Burger Month!'
