As 2023 draws to a close, we take a look back on some of the highlights for Yancey County 4-H. The purpose of 4-H is to provide youth with exciting learning opportunities to help develop them into positive members of our community.
Yancey County 4-H reached over 900 youth through our hands-on school enrichment programs, clubs, and events. Some of our largest school enrichment programs this past year included Embryology with all Second Graders and Eighth Graders in the County, Fire Safety with all Third Graders and Health & Nutrition programs with multiple classrooms in grades K-8.
Yancey County 4-H also added three new clubs and groups in 2023: Cooking Club, Rabbit Group and STEM Club. During our 2023 Summer Fun Program, seven local camps were offered for youth in Yancey County, with learning opportunities including culture explorers, farm to fork, STEM & Robotics, Outdoor Adventures, Food Preservation and more. This year we also took eight youth to 4-H Overnight Camp at The Eastern 4-H Center in Columbia, NC!
Yancey County 4-H had several youth achieve great accomplishments and awards in 2023. Yancey Longshots Club had nineteen youth qualify to attend the 2023 North Carolina 4-H Shooting Sports State Tournament in Ellerbe, NC. This was the most youth in club history who qualified to compete in the tournament!
Four Yancey County 4-H’ers submitted project record books and portfolios for State Competition: Benjamin Varney won Silver for both his portfolio and project record book on Science & Technology, and Derek Heidenfelder won Gold for both his portfolio and project record book on Science & Technology. Sam Gantt won Gold for his record book on Science & Technology and Silver for his record book on Animal Science
Four youth competed at the West District Activity Day for the 2023 4-H Presentation Competition: Sam Gantt, Daisy Brantley, Cooper Ledford and Jacob Ledford. Jacob, Cooper, Daisy and Sam all advanced to the State Presentation competition. At the State competition, Daisy won Gold for her presentation on the evolution of Rock n’ Roll music and Sam won Gold for his presentation on Electric Cars. Congratulations to each of these youth who worked so hard on their projects in 2023!

Thank you to all of our youth participants, families, teachers, volunteers, donors, and community members for making 2023 a successful year for Yancey County 4-H! As we reflect back on 2023, we look forward to more amazing opportunities in 2024. In 2024, Yancey County 4-H will have the following opportunities available for youth: Yancey Longshots Club, Outdoor Adventures Club, Sewing Club, Lego Club, Arts & Crafts Group, Livestock Club, Cooking Club, STEM Club and Horse Group. In addition to these clubs, Yancey County 4-H offers many other opportunities, including Summer Fun Programs, Special Interest Workshops and Activities and more!
