Trout hatcheries require a good source of disease free water of constant temperature and quality. This is usually supplied by a well. The well water's physical and chemical properties should fall in the following ranges.
| Ammonia | 0.0125 ppm |
| Chlorine | 0.03 ppm |
| Copper | 0.006 ppm in soft water |
| Hydrogen Sulfide | 0.002 ppm |
| Lead | 0.03 ppm |
| Nitrogen | less than 102% of saturation |
| Solids (suspended and settleable) | 80 ppm |
| Zinc | 0.03 ppm |
| Dissolved Oxygen (DO) | 5 - saturation |
| Carbon Dioxide | 0 - 10 ppm |
| Alkalinity | 10 - 400 ppm |
| pH | 6.5 - 8.0 |
| Hardness | 10 - 400 ppm |
