Even though the gardening season is winding down, there is still just one more thing left to do before 2022 is officially in the books: take and submit your soil samples!
NC State and our partners at the NCDA&CS have provided some wonderful resources if you have questions on how to take and properly submit your soil samples. You can read those in detail at Haywood Soil Test Information, A Gardeners Guide to Soil Testing and/or Soil Sampling
Home Lawns & Gardens. For more detailed instructions on taking a soil sample, check out the video from our Homegrown series below:
Remember that soil samples must be received by November 30th to avoid the $4 peak season fee, which begins December 1st and goes through March 31st. It is advisable to have samples in the mail before the Thanksgiving Holiday since it may be 3-4 business days before they are received in Raleigh. Taking and submitting soil samples now will help you avoid the fee and give you time to prepare for the 2023 gardening season.
You can pick up soil boxes (free of charge) and forms from the Haywood County Extension Office from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., M-F. You can also download and print the form at home. If you have more questions, contact us at (828) 456-3575 or at wsmarsh2@ncsu.edu.
